Forests managed by Indigenous nations face a $100 million funding gap

A new report from the Intertribal Timber Council reveals that Forests Managed by Indigenous nations in the US are severely underfunded. To achieve parity with forests managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the US Forest Service, the federal government would need to increase funding by almost $96 million annually. Tribal forests, which cover nearly 19 million acres, are essential to tribal communities, providing resources for subsistence, employment, and cultural and religious practices. The lack of funding has led to limited staffing and issues around workforce capacity, putting the health of tribal forests at risk.
