Ecuador votes to stop oil drilling in Amazon reserve: “Historic”

Ecuadorans have voted in favor of stopping an Oil Drilling project in the Yasuni National Park, a diverse biosphere in the Amazon Reserve. The "Yes" vote won by 59 percent, with 98 percent of votes tallied. The oil block in question contributes 12 percent of Ecuador's daily oil production and is located in a reserve home to three uncontacted indigenous populations and numerous plant and animal species. The fate of the reserve has drawn international attention, with celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Greta Thunberg praising the historic referendum as an example of climate democracy.
