With thousands of N.W.T. evacuees in Alberta, local experts fear impact of toxic drug crisis

A group of healthcare workers in Alberta is providing information to wildfire evacuees from the Northwest Territories on how to access medication for opioid-use disorder in Calgary and Edmonton. Missing even a day of medication can cause withdrawal symptoms and increase the risk of relapse. The fear is that the displacement of evacuees due to wildfires could lead to more Toxic Drug poisonings and deaths. The group has created fliers listing opioid agonist therapy clinics and programs to make it easier for people to access care. They are also working on translating the information into Cree and Dene.
