Italian cheesemakers microchip parmesan in bid to fight fraudsters

Italian cheesemakers of parmigiano reggiano, a protected status cheese, have started using microchips to prevent counterfeiting. The microchips, about the size of a grain of salt, have been inserted into the labels on the rind of 120,000 wheels of cheese. These chips work as scannable food tags with a QR code label, allowing consumers to trace the cheese back to its place of origin. The Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium hopes that this technology will help enforce the protected status of the cheese, distinguishing it from imitations. In the United States, parmesan does not have protected status.
