These 1 Million New Seagrass Seedlings Will Protect Sardinia’s Beaches While Storing 35-Times More Carbon Than Trees

The Med Sea Foundation in Sardinia, Italy, plans to plant 1 million Seagrass plants by 2050 across 19 square miles of coastline to protect marine ecosystems and combat climate change. Seagrass stores 35 times more carbon than tropical rainforests and plays a vital role in regulating ocean acidity, dissipating wave energy, and providing habitat for marine species. The project will also involve installing anti-trawl barriers to deter illegal fishing. The initiative is being supported by the University of Exeter, Extreme-E, and Sotheby's Auctioneers, and similar restoration activities are taking place in Wales and Virginia.
