China’s newly built Paracels airstrip could host drones, analyst says

China has built a 600-meter airstrip on Triton Island in the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea, according to satellite photos. The airstrip is not long enough for fighter jets or bombers, but it could host medium-sized drones and small manned turboprop aircraft, which would allow China to assert its jurisdiction over the area. The Paracel Islands are claimed by China, Vietnam, and Taiwan, but have been occupied by China since 1974. The new airstrip could make it difficult for Vietnam to match China's presence in the region.
