Lithuania has decided to temporarily close two of its checkpoints with Belarus due to concerns over the presence of Russia-linked Wagner Group mercenaries in Belarus. The crossings at Tverecius and Sumskas will be closed, and traffic will be redirected to the Medininkai checkpoint. Lithuania has been a supporter of Ukraine and a refuge for those fleeing repression in Belarus and Russia. The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service estimates there could be up to 4,500 Wagner fighters in Belarus, some stationed near the Lithuanian and Polish borders. Other neighboring countries, such as Latvia and Poland, have also increased border security.
