Himalayan Monsoon Disaster: Climate Change Colludes with Bad Development

Torrential rains, floods, and landslides have caused massive damage and loss of life in Himachal Pradesh, India's Himalayan foothill provinces. The state has experienced a six-fold increase in major landslides in the past two years, with 117 occurring in 2022. The destruction is partly attributed to faulty ecological development, including deforestation and road cutting, which has narrowed river courses and filled riverbeds with silt. Land use changes, such as encroachment on riverbanks, and the proliferation of cement plants and hydroelectric projects, have also exacerbated the damage. Climate change is contributing to the increase in extreme weather events in the region.
