The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved a boat Fuel Ingredient made from discarded plastic that its own risk formula determined could cause cancer in everyone exposed to it over a lifetime. The risk level was a million times higher than what the EPA usually considers acceptable for new chemicals and six times worse than the risk of lung cancer from smoking. The EPA did not conduct safety reviews or find ways to reduce the risk before approving the ingredient. The agency also failed to include sky-high cancer risks associated with the ingredient in its consent order.
