‘Someone is Complicit’, Says SC on Atiq Ahmad’s Killing, Seeks Status Report from UP on 183 ‘Police Encounters’

The Supreme Court has criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for the killing of former Lok Sabha member Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf in police custody. The court has asked for a Status Report on 183 "police encounters" that have occurred since 2017. The state police claim that these encounters resulted in the deaths of 183 individuals, but there have been allegations that many of them were staged. The court has also rejected a request for an independent judicial commission and directed the government to file an affidavit within six weeks with details on the encounters.
