The closure also led to decreases in sulfur dioxide and arsenic levels in the area. The study highlights the immediate health benefits of cutting carbon emissions and demonstrates that reducing pollution can save lives. The closure of Shenango came after years of community agitation and fines for air quality violations. However, other facilities in the region, such as the Clairton coke oven and Mon Valley steel works, continue to pose health risks.
