Iraq bans the word “homosexual” on all media and offers an alternative

The Media and Communications Commission in Iraq has banned the use of the terms "homosexual" and "homosexuality" on all media and social media platforms in the country, instead opting for the term "sexual deviancy." The commission claims that these terms carry negative connotations within Iraqi society. Noncompliance with this directive may result in fines. While Iraq's penal code does not explicitly criminalize homosexuality, the ambiguity has led to discrimination, abuse, and fatal attacks against the LGBTQ community. Many Muslim-majority countries, influenced by cultural and religious factors, have resisted LGBTQ rights, with some even imposing the death penalty for homosexual acts.
