China Infiltrating US ‘Red Zone’ With Latin American Push

China's infrastructure projects across South and Central America are raising concerns about their potential military presence near the US. The commander of US Southern Command, General Laura Richardson, warned that China's economic initiatives could easily be transformed to support a military foothold. While there is no Chinese military base in the Western Hemisphere, China's use of dual-use technologies to build ports and its proliferation of telecommunication infrastructure in the region are worrisome. Richardson also highlighted the need for the US to provide alternative options to Latin American countries, as they are being outcompeted by China.
