More than 16,500 homes and buildings destroyed by Myanmar junta since coup

Myanmar's military junta has Destroyed over 16,500 homes and buildings, claiming they "encroached on land owned by the state." The evictions and demolitions have occurred in large cities and towns across the country since the military coup in February 2021. The actual number of destroyed structures may be higher. Families who have lost their homes are now facing hardship, and Human Rights activists argue that the junta's actions violate human rights. The United Nations has condemned the forced removal of houses as a violation of basic human rights and a war crime. Negotiations to suspend or postpone demolitions are no longer possible under military rule.
