The civil rights law used to charge Trump in 2020 election case, explained

Former President Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to three counts of conspiracy and one count of obstruction related to the Jan. 6 insurrection. The charges include conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights. The latter charge is based on a Civil Rights statute originally adopted in 1870 to stop groups like the Ku Klux Klan from terrorizing Black voters. The indictment alleges that Trump engaged in a conspiracy to prevent Americans from voting and to subvert the election process. The charges send a strong signal that Trump is not above the law.
