Victims of a wildfire in northern New Mexico caused by the U.S. Forest Service last year have received over $14 million in compensation so far, according to federal emergency managers. Congress allocated nearly $4 billion to pay claims resulting from the 2022 Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire. The claims office has received over 1,600 notices of loss and has around $50 million worth of claims that are being processed. They estimate that the office will be operational for the next five to six years to ensure all claimants receive their due compensation. The office has also started providing flood insurance protection to eligible claimants.
