The Jardim Gramacho landfill in Rio de Janeiro, once one of the largest in Latin America, has been transformed into a Mangrove Forest. The landfill, which received 80 million metric tonnes of trash between 1970 and 2012, has been restored by a public-private partnership led by the Rio Municipal Cleaning Company. Planting 24 acres of mangroves at a time, the forest now stretches over 120 acres and is the largest mangrove area in the bay.
