Voting underway in the Central African Republic

Voting is currently taking place in the Central African Republic for a referendum that would allow President Faustin-Archange Touadéra to run for a third term. Touadéra, who was re-elected in 2020 amidst accusations of fraud and rebel group incursions, is facing opposition from those who believe he wants to remain president for life. The draft of the new Constitution aims to extend the presidential term from five to seven years and eliminate term limits. The main opposition parties, civil society organizations, and rebel groups have called for a boycott of the vote.
