Leafy berm lauded by one council agency, another threatens to chop it down

Mark van Kaathoven and his husband have spent nearly 30 years creating a lush garden on their property in Freemans Bay, Auckland. They have also planted neighboring berms and tended to local gardens. However, Auckland Transport (AT) recently sent a letter to residents on Beresford Street West and Hepburn Road, stating that berm planting had taken place without approval and needed to be trimmed back. AT threatened to remove all plantings except for the original trees if they were not cut back. Van Kaathoven expressed surprise at the letter and stated his willingness to trim the plants but not to the extent suggested by AT.
