Gender inequality in sport: The challenges facing female athletes

Despite progress in women's sport, Gender Inequality remains a major challenge in terms of equal pay, visibility, and training conditions. The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) has found that countries implementing quotas are achieving more balanced representation of women in sports organizations, with Finland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom leading the way. Equal pay remains a significant issue, with female salaries in sports such as basketball significantly lower than their male counterparts. FIFA has announced a 300% increase in bonuses for the 2023 Women's World Cup, but there is still a gap between bonuses awarded to men and women. Training conditions and infrastructure for female athletes also need improvement.
