St. Louis officials and community stakeholders have unveiled a memorial to remember the destruction of the Mill Creek Valley Neighborhood, which forced out nearly 20,000 mostly Black residents in the 1950s and 1960s. The memorial, called Pillars of the Valley, consists of eight granite and limestone structures standing 15 feet tall and will eventually stretch for a mile. The installation includes the names, ages, and occupations of the residents who once lived in the neighborhood, and aims to shed light on the history of racial injustice and displacement caused by urban renewal policies.
