Niger coup: world leaders react to president’s detention

World leaders, including US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, have reacted to the apparent coup attempt in Niger after President Mohamed Bazoum was detained by the Presidential Guard. Blinken expressed support for Bazoum and called for his immediate release. Tinubu, the new head of regional bloc ECOWAS, announced that Benin's President Patrice Talon would be mediating in Niger. Talon emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution but stated that all means would be used if necessary to restore constitutional order. Tinubu has been advocating for a return to democracy in West African countries.
