Senegal: security lifted around opponent Sonko’s home

Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko's Security detail has been lifted, allowing him to leave his home in Dakar. Sonko had been blocked by security forces since May 28th and was sentenced to two years in prison on June 1st, making him ineligible for the 2024 presidential election. His conviction led to violent protests in Senegal, resulting in 16 deaths according to authorities and around thirty according to the opposition. Sonko has warned of "indescribable chaos" if he is prevented from standing in the next presidential election. He also faces a six-month suspended prison sentence for defamation.
