Richard Okorogheye’s death was ‘consistent with drowning’

Richard Okorogheye, a 19-year-old student with sickle cell anaemia, was found dead in a pond in Epping Forest on April 5, 2021. An inquest heard that his cause of Death was "consistent with drowning." The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched an investigation into the police's handling of the case, finding that they provided an "unacceptable level of service" to Okorogheye's mother. The IOPC concluded that while there were mistakes made, the delay in classifying Okorogheye as a missing person was not due to his or his mother's race. The inquest will not investigate the wider circumstances surrounding Okorogheye's death.
