New data from NHS England reveals that bureaucratic delays, such as signing discharge papers and lack of transport and medication, are causing hundreds of patients to be "bed blockers" in hospitals each day. On average, 390 patients a day are waiting for a discharge summary, 98 a day are stuck due to lack of transport, and 44 a day remain in hospital because of missing medication. The data also shows that an average of 12,334 hospital beds in England per day last month were occupied by patients ready to be discharged. This is up from 11,590 in June 2018.
