According to a new Report from the nonpartisan Council on Criminal Justice, homicides are declining in American Cities but remain higher than pre-pandemic levels. The report analyzed data from 30 US cities and found that homicides dropped by an average of 9.4% in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period last year, but were still 24% higher than in 2019. Motor vehicle thefts also increased sharply in the analyzed cities. The report suggests that while crime rates are trending downward overall, they have not returned to pre-pandemic levels.
