Independent scientist resigns from pesticide regulator over transparency concerns

Scientists advising Ottawa's Pesticide Regulator, Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), have raised concerns about the agency's transparency and outdated system. Valerie Langlois, a researcher and professor at the University of Quebec, and Bruce Lanphear, a public health physician at Simon Fraser University, have both called for changes at the PMRA. Lanphear resigned from the agency's science advisory committee due to frustration over withheld information. The scientists argue that the PMRA's methodology for assessing pesticides is obsolete and that it fails to recognize the absence of safe levels for certain chemicals. Both Langlois and Lanphear remain hopeful for positive reform at the regulator.
