Egyptian researcher will ‘return to Italy’ following presidential pardon – Italian PM

Egyptian Researcher Patrick Zaki has been pardoned by President el-Sisi after being sentenced to three years in prison for "disseminating false news." Zaki, who worked as a gender rights researcher, was arrested in February 2020 and had been unable to leave Egypt pending trial. His case has drawn attention in Italy, where many were reminded of the murder of Italian student Giulio Regeni in Cairo in 2016. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed the news, stating that Zaki would be returning to Italy and wishing him a peaceful and successful life.
