To Save CO2, Australia Opts To Upcycle Tallest Skyscraper

In 2014, Australian firm AMP Capital issued a challenge to transform their skyscraper headquarters into a new structure without demolishing it. The innovative approach involved adding a second tower to the existing building, saving approximately 12,000 tons of CO2. Danish architects 3XN led the project, supported by Arup and Australian architects BVN. The result, named Quay Quarter Tower, doubled office capacity and was honored with the title of World Building of the Year. The project serves as a case study for the potential of repurposing towers and saved AMP $150 million.
