Senegal’s opposition supporters bang pots and pans in protest

Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko led a peaceful protest by banging pots and pans after authorities blocked a rally where he was set to announce his candidacy for the 2024 presidential elections. Sonko, who has been confined at his home since May, has faced questions about his eligibility due to criminal convictions. Despite this, he was unanimously voted as the candidate for the PASTEF-Patriots party. The protest, which saw participation in several districts of Dakar, aimed to express disapproval and call for President Macky Sall to step down. Sonko's convictions in May and June led to deadly clashes between supporters and security forces.
