Kenya’s Ruto calls for stronger, financially autonomous A.U. at Mid-Year Meeting

Kenya's President William Ruto has called for a reform of the African Union (AU) at its fifth Mid-Year coordination meeting. Ruto emphasized the need for the AU to have stronger financial autonomy, stating that chronic dependence on partners is inconsistent with the aspiration of independence and sovereignty. Currently, less than 40% of member states pay their yearly contributions to the AU. Ruto also highlighted the burden of debt carried by many African countries and advocated for a fairer financial system. The meeting's focus was on the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
