Iowa’s restrictive abortion measure faces legal challenge as governor prepares to sign it into law

An Iowa judge is set to consider a request to delay the state's new ban on most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, just as Governor Kim Reynolds is scheduled to sign the measure into law. The new legislation prohibits almost all abortions once cardiac activity can be detected, usually around six weeks of pregnancy. The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa, Planned Parenthood North Central States, and the Emma Goldman Clinic have filed a legal challenge against the law. Iowa's Supreme Court reversed its ruling affirming a woman's right to abortion last year, prompting Reynolds to seek reinstatement of her blocked 2018 law, which is similar to the new one.
