Deforestation Fell 26% in Colombian Amazon Last Year Since Peace and Reconciliation with Rebels in FARC

Colombia has seen a 26% reduction in Deforestation in conflict areas of the Amazon since the left-wing administration negotiated peace with the FARC rebels. President Gustavo Petro has prioritized the environment in peace negotiations, resulting in a deforestation moratorium in the forested state of Gauviare. Around 50,000 hectares of rainforest have been saved as a result, the highest reduction in deforestation in two decades. Colombia is the second-most biodiverse country on Earth, and the government's efforts to protect forests would help preserve one of the most valuable tropical forest ecosystems.
