78 whales killed in front of cruise ship passengers

Cruise Ship Passengers witnessed the killing of 78 pilot whales in the Faroe Islands, a self-governing region of Denmark. The local government defends the tradition of hunting whales and dolphins, known as "grind," as an integral part of Faroese food culture. However, conservationists and the cruise line, Ambassador Cruise Line, strongly oppose the practice. The Faroese catch an average of 600 pilot whales annually. The killing of more than 1,400 dolphins in the region sparked outrage in 2021. The pilot whale species is threatened by whaling, entanglement in fishing gear, disease, and water contaminants.
