This Monkey Was Already Endangered When Discovered in 2003–but is Now on the Up and Up

Scientists have Discovered and worked to conserve the kipunji Monkey, a species that was identified as critically endangered in 2003. Through a combination of protected area management, community outreach, and long-term monitoring programs, the kipunji population has increased by 65%. Illegal activities in the monkey's habitat have also decreased significantly, with an 81% reduction in Mount Rungwe and Livingstone/Kitulo forests. The Tanzanian government has established nature reserves in the areas of the kipunji's habitat that were not already protected, and locals are being incentivized to engage in beekeeping instead of activities like deforestation and poaching.
