Marius Mihai Draghici, a member of a people-smuggling ring, has been sentenced to over 12 years in jail for the manslaughter of 39 Vietnamese migrants who were found dead in a lorry trailer in Essex in October 2019. The victims, aged between 15 and 44, had paid up to £13,000 each for a "VIP" smuggling service in the hope of a better life in the UK. Draghici was described as an "essential cog" in the conspiracy and was extradited from Romania to face charges. Four other gang members were previously jailed for their involvement in the deaths.
