New Legislation In Michigan Gives ‘Meaningful 2nd Chances’ To Low-Level, Nonviolent Offenders

Michigan's "Clean Slate" initiative, a bipartisan legislation aimed at automatic expungement of low-level, nonviolent offenses, has finally gone into effect. Nearly 850,000 residents with at least one conviction have benefited from the law change, as their charges were automatically set aside. This initiative aims to clear a range of convictions from individuals' records after a waiting period, providing them with better access to housing and job opportunities. Since the launch of the automatic expungement program on April 11, over 250,000 Michigan residents have had their criminal records sealed. Similar relief is available in other states as well.
