Soil improvements could keep planet within 1.5C heating target, research shows

New research suggests that making marginal improvements to agricultural soils worldwide could store enough Carbon to keep global heating within the 1.5C target. Farming techniques that enhance long-term fertility and yields can also increase carbon storage in soils but are often overlooked in favor of intensive methods. Storing 1% more carbon in around half of the world's agricultural soils could absorb approximately 31 gigatons of carbon dioxide annually, closing the gap between planned emissions reductions and the necessary carbon cuts by 2030. Restoring degraded soils would be cost-effective and could allow farmers to sell carbon credits based on their fields' carbon absorption.
