Gas Platform Explosion Off Mexico Kills 2 Workers

An explosion and fire destroyed an offshore gas platform in the Gulf of Mexico, killing two workers and leaving one missing. The platform, operated by state-owned oil company Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), was completely destroyed, but nearby platforms were unaffected. Eight workers were injured, with none of the injuries being life-threatening. Pemex evacuated 321 workers from the platform. There appears to be little risk of an oil spill, but the accident may require the company to increase flaring of gas, which could release large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The accident is expected to temporarily reduce crude oil production.
