Tamil Nadu Govt Brings New Rules to Save Wildlife from Electrocution Within 5km of Forest Areas

The Tamil Nadu government has issued new rules to protect wildlife, particularly elephants, from electrocution. Within a 5km radius of forest areas, individuals or companies must seek prior permission and register electric fences, including solar fences. The rules aim to standardize and regulate the erection of power fences and prevent the death of wildlife. Compliance will be ensured through joint inspections by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and the forest department. The District Forest Officer will consider applications for approval, reduction, or rejection within 45 days. Existing power fences must be registered within 60 days.
