Pacific Island scientists in New Zealand have received a $1 million grant to study the use of Kava, a traditional plant preparation, and ceremony for treating PTSD. Dr. Apo Aporosa and Dr. Sione Vaka aim to revise the reputation of kava, which was damaged by pharmaceutical use in the past. The study will combine kava drink with traditional conversation therapy, known as talanoa. The researchers hope to prove the effectiveness of traditional Pacific knowledge in treating PTSD and release a free e-book on performing the ceremony and intervention.
