The remains of hundreds of Babies are set to be exhumed from a Mass Grave in Ireland, shedding light on the dark legacy of Mother and Baby Homes. Between 1922 and 1998, unmarried, pregnant women were incarcerated in these institutions, with their babies handed over to religious orders. The discovery of death certificates for 796 babies and toddlers at St Mary's Mother and Baby Home in 2012 sparked an inquiry, which has now led to the appointment of a former Red Cross envoy to oversee the exhumation. The Mother and Baby Homes were part of a system dedicated to controlling female behaviour and profiting from adoptions.
