Moroccan women reclaim the century-old art of the Gnaoua

Young Moroccan Women are reclaiming the centuries-old art of Gnaoua, a spiritual musical repertoire that gained UNESCO recognition in 2019. Asma Hamzaoui, the frontwoman of all-female group "Bnat Timbouktou", is one of the first women to perform Gnaoua. She learned to play the guembri, a three-stringed lute, from her father and formed the group in 2012. Other women, such as Hind Ennaira, have been inspired to explore their passion for the traditionally masculine art form. Gnaoua has transitioned from private gatherings to public events like the Gnaoua festival held in Essaouira.
