Burundian ATMIS troops celebrate Independence Day in Somalia

Burundian troops with the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia celebrated Burundi's 61st Independence Day in Mogadishu and Jowhar. High-ranking officials, including representatives from ATMIS and the United Nations, attended the events. The head of ATMIS highlighted Burundi's contributions to peace in Africa, particularly in Somalia and Central Africa. The UN Deputy Special Representative for Somalia praised Burundian peacekeepers for their courage and sacrifice and pledged continued UN support. Burundi gained independence from Belgium on July 1, 1962, and was part of the territory known as Ruanda-Urundi under Belgian colonial rule.
