CIA director tells Russian counterpart U.S. played no role in Wagner rebellion

CIA Director William Burns reached out to the head of Russia's foreign intelligence service to convey that the US had no involvement in the recent armed rebellion by Wagner mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin. The Biden administration has emphasized that it considers the uprising an internal Russian affair. President Biden stated that the US was making efforts to prevent Putin from blaming the West or NATO for the events. Burns had previously traveled to Ukraine to reaffirm US commitment in sharing intelligence to help Ukraine defend against Russian aggression. US intelligence agencies had been monitoring tensions between Prigozhin and the Russian military and had briefed stakeholders on the potential rebellion.
