The UN General Assembly has created an independent Body to investigate the fate of thousands of Missing people in Syria since the start of the war in 2011. Over 100,000 people are estimated to have disappeared during the conflict, and more than half a million have been killed. The new body, called the Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic, aims to clarify the fate and whereabouts of missing individuals and provide support to their families. The resolution was passed with 83 votes in favor, 11 opposed, and 62 abstentions, despite objections from Syria, Russia, China, and Iran.
