First Recorded Birth of Critically-Endangered Burmese Peacock Turtle Hatchlings (WATCH)

In Myanmar, the first recorded birth of critically-endangered Burmese Peacock Turtle Hatchlings has been celebrated. The conservation group Flora and Fauna International, along with local volunteers and knowledge keepers, undertook a breeding program to preserve these endangered reptiles. The program involved training locals to become "turtle guardians" who patrolled the shores, identified nesting areas, and protected them. The video of the turtles hatching is the first known recording of the species being born in the wild. The Burmese peacock turtles, named for the orange spots on their shells, have been overhunted and are considered a delicacy in Myanmar.
