Tsipras steps down as Greece’s opposition leader after election defeat

Alexis Tsipras, the leader of Greece's left-wing opposition Party Syriza, has resigned following his party's crushing defeat in Sunday's general election. The governing New Democracy party claimed around 40% of the vote, while Syriza only secured 18%. Tsipras, who served as prime minister from 2015 to 2019 during Greece's financial crisis, said that the party needs new leadership and he will not be a candidate. Commentators attribute Syriza's poor performance to their negative campaign, the resurgence of the socialist party Pasok, and the appearance of splinter parties led by former Tsipras allies.
