Extreme heat will cost the US $1 billion in health care costs — this summer alone

Extreme heat caused by climate change will cost the US $1bn in healthcare-related costs this Summer, according to the Center for American Progress. The report predicts almost 235,000 emergency department visits and more than 56,000 hospital admissions for heat-related conditions across the country this summer. Virginia Commonwealth University studied health insurance claims made during heatwaves in Virginia and found Extreme Heat led to some 400 outpatient care visits for heat-related illness, 4,600 emergency room visits for heat-related or heat-adjacent illness, and 2,000 heat-related hospital admissions each summer. The burden of the cost will be felt most acutely by low-income and marginalised communities.
