Drug production and usage have increased in Myanmar since the military coup in February 2021, according to ethnic rebel groups and activists. They attribute the rise in the country's Drug market to a decline in rule of law and poor governance amid the junta's reign. The Ta’ang National Liberation Army destroyed drugs worth $430,000 to mark International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. They said some drugs were being produced by militia forces directly under the junta, such as the Pyu Saw Htee, to fund food and salaries for their fighters. Poppy cultivation has almost doubled since the coup.
